What baccarat asks you to bet

In the punto banco baccarat format used across most Philippine online and live lobbies, you do not control hit-or-stand decisions. You bet on which of two hands finishes closer to nine: Player or Banker. A third option, Tie, wins only when both hands match. Cards are dealt to those two sides; your job is to pick a side before the deal.

That passive structure is why baccarat feels simpler than blackjack once you know the scoring. It is also why beginners sometimes over-bet Tie for the flashy payout.

Card values and naturals

Aces count as one. Cards two through nine keep face value. Tens and face cards count as zero. If a two-card total reaches ten or more, keep only the last digit: eight plus nine becomes seven, not seventeen. The strongest two-card totals are eight and nine; those are naturals. When either side shows a natural, the round usually ends with no third card.

Player, Banker, Tie, and commissions

Player wins typically pay one-to-one. Banker wins typically pay one-to-one minus a five percent commission on that win, because the Banker side has a slightly lower house edge. Tie pays a long price (often eight-to-one or nine-to-one) with a much higher house edge. Side bets such as pairs exist on many live shoes; read each side bet as its own product.

  • Confirm commission handling on Banker wins.
  • Confirm Tie payout on that exact table.
  • Confirm whether pairs or other side bets are optional.
  • Confirm minimum seat stake before the shoe starts.

Round flow without player decisions

  1. Place chips on Player, Banker, and/or Tie before the deal locks.
  2. Two cards go to Player and two to Banker.
  3. Naturals settle immediately when present.
  4. Otherwise the third-card chart runs automatically.
  5. Closest to nine wins; equal totals push Player and Banker stakes.

You never choose the third card in standard punto banco. If a product advertises “free hand” choices, you have left the classic ruleset: read that help page as a different game.

Mistakes to avoid

Chasing Tie after a long no-tie streak is the classic bankroll burner. Another is treating scoreboard “patterns” as predictive when each shoe still carries house edge. A third is confusing Lucky 9’s optional hit with baccarat’s forced chart. A fourth is ignoring commission until the cashier summary looks “short.”

On mobile, verify you are on the intended live shoe or RNG seat. Availability can change by date, device, and location; this page does not claim a named baccarat title is currently offered on any partner destination.
